APAD 201: Traffic jam

What a bummer! This was the scene at St. 51 (Pasteur), corner of Sihanouk Blvd., on a Friday night. What a mess, eh?

… and because we were stuck here for more than an hour we were late to where we were going… Family Night at Aziza’s Place.

APAD 200: King of Kampot road

Posted by on Nov 15, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, transportation, travel, work | 3 comments

This is the alternative road, National Road 2,  going to Kampot province. As you can see, it is very quiet with only a horse-drawn cart plying the route. Along with ox-driven carts, they are considered the kings of this road.

This is my 2ooth entry – yipeeeeee! – and it’s for this week’s Our World Tuesday.Click on the logo for more pictures of our world.

APAD 199: A Khmer-style archway

Posted by on Nov 14, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, Expat Life, travel | 1 comment

A beautiful Khmer-style archway.

This ornate archway, found everywhere in Cambodia, marks the entrance to a wat, or temple, or tell you that there is a wat up ahead. The more ornate the designs are signifies that a wat has a lot of well-to-do supporters. How can you miss this one?

APAD 198: Sunset along the banks of Mekong

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Expat Life | 7 comments

A friend of mine visited Phnom Penh recently and I met her in a hotel along Sisowath Quay. The hotel boasts of its prime location, sitting along the banks of the mighty Mekong River and is centrally located in the heart of Phnom Penh’s business and tourist districts. And here is the view from her hotel room…

It’s one of those profound moments that I love, watching the sun slowly melting into the horizon and the darkness creeping in.

APAD 197: The Cambodian King and the King Father

Posted by on Nov 10, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, festivals, people | 4 comments

Took this picture two years ago, around same time this year. The city was dressed up to celebrated the 55th Independence Day of Cambodia.

Happy Independence Day, Cambodia!
November 9, 2011

Large billboards bedecked in Cambodian national colours were put up in the city’s main thoroughfares. The billboards featured the Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni (left) and the King Father Norodom Sihanouk, with the Independence Monument.

Yesterday is supposedly the first day of the three-day Bon Oum Teuk, or Water Festival. Due to the recent events (flooding in the countryside), the celebration was canceled this year. According to news reports, the festival was canceled because the water level remains high. More info about this here.
