I bought my wife a sapphire ring in Cambodia at a very reputable shop, yep it broke when we got home and the Jeweller said it was cut glass, oh well!
I have heard the Pailin area is rich in gems, hope these are the real thing.
Sorry to hear about that, Mark. It is indeed difficult to find shops that sell genuine stuff, especially some years ago. I think these days it is much, much better now. My wedding ring was custom-made in one of the jewelry shops at the Russian market {Tuol Tumpong market} here and when I had it appraised back in my country, the {Cambodian} gold content was high quality and the value was three-fold the original price.
