APAD 244: Denis Darzacq Photography in Phnom Penh, Part 2
The other week I passed by the French Embassy and was surprised to find out that the photographs of the French photographer Denis Darzacq were still not taken down. If you can recall, I was able to photograph one portion of the wall that showed photographs of locals with their helmets on.
Good thing is that I photographed the other part of the wall that showed another series of his photographs:

He is one of the best-known photographers of his generation and has exhibited all around the world. His series “La chute” (“The Fall”) made him an artist recognized by the public, after other professionals and collectors had appreciated his talent. In love with color and movement, he always carefully organizes his striking images in order to produce meaning and encourage thougths. This year, two of his series will be spectacularly dis-played on the outside wall of the French Embassy. The series “Hyper” depicts young men and girls, dancers and athletes, floating in front of his lens in the colorful departments of the new temples of consumer society. Suspended in air, to the point where this would seem impossible without manipulation, these floating figures confront accumulations of products such as rolls of carpet. – Photo Phnom Penh Festival 2011 Programme
APAD 243: Sweet mango pie
I have seen several stalls selling yellow, ripe mangoes at the public market near where we live and it can only mean one thing. Undoubtedly, summer season in the Kingdom is here and the much-awaited mango season is now on!
Price per kilo is reasonable, for now, but I expect it to be cheaper as we head into the summer. I bought several pieces, both yellow and green ones. I love mangoes. The green ones I eat with a combo of salt, sugar, pepper and fresh chilli, the popular dipping of the locals. My husband, not so much. However, he can not resist fresh mango slices when served for dessert. Or the delightful mango pie that I make from time to time…
I make my own pie pastry using a recipe I culled from one of the food blogs online. I have to say it is the best pie pastry I ever made. My husband loves it, too.

The weather today is perfect for a game of volleyball. In Cambodia, football (soccer) and volleyball are the most popular spectator and participant sports. They are played everywhere.
There are plenty of potentials out there from the rural villages. Like the above photo, it is very common to see men playing volleyball, with bare feet, in a dusty yard.
Cambodia takes pride in its Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled), or CNVLD, currently the ranked number two in the world. This year, CNVLD aims to reach the top spot. If I am not mistaken, the current world number one is Germany.

Attention-grabbing, isn’t it? I believe all of you will agree with me that it is so.
I have to say that after reading the name on that sign, images were running through my head, lol. The area where this sign is located used to be a red-light district not long ago. However, due to government-crackdown on brothels, the area was cleaned up and there cheap guest-houses and inns sprouted instead as replacements. Sadly, nothing changed, especially at night. The newly-built structures merely masked the “trade”.
I asked my husband to do a U-turn and go back so I could get a photo. The sign certainly piqued my interest about the advertised place; maybe yours will be, as well. I think despite its connotation – intended, or unintended due to language differences – it is a funny sign 🙂
