APAD 190: A Khmer traditional house

This is how a typical rural Khmer house looks like. It is made of wood and palm fronds.

This type of Khmer house is found all over the countryside. They are all on stilts and up above the ground, as you can see in the picture. This is to avoid flood-waters. On dry, summer season, the lower part of the house is used as a kitchen, a storage area for their things and a rest area at daytime. In the evenings, it is also used to shelter the family’s farm animals.

Aren’t they pretty? They’re made from 100% Cambodian silk. These bags are priced based on how much silk was used.

Here, haggling is an art. One of these bags here can be had for less than $5, if you only know how to deal with the sellers.

APAD 186: Riverside promenade

At the end of the day, when the sun is about to set, locals and tourists alike gather at the riverside. Here, three rivers meet: the Mighty Mekong, Tonle Bassac, and Tonle Sap.

I could sit there for hours and just watch the boats and boathouses that pass by.
