… and waiting to be restored.

Despite the many millions of dollars poured into and countless experts from different countries that raced to help in the restoration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Angkor Wat – there are still other lesser known temples  in the complex (but equally fascinating) that lie in shambles waiting to get noticed.

APAD 047: Fruit of the season

This is called khnao in Khmer language, or jackfruit in English, and jackfruit trees are in season now in Cambodia. We also have this fruit in the Philippines and we call it langka.

If I am not mistaken, the jackfruit is the world’s largest fruit. It is commonly eaten when it is ripe – when it develops a very strong sweet odour – and has a sweet flavour. It can also be eaten when unripe, as a vegetable. As you can see, the spiky skin of the fruit has segments of yellow flesh underneath it, and each surrounds a large seed. The seeds can be boiled and eaten, too. I’m not really fond of jackfruit but I do like it when it is made into a smoothie.

APAD 046: Traffic of shadows

Posted by on Apr 24, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, Shadow Shot Sunday, transportation | 7 comments

Took this in front of the Royal Palace (you can see the Palace wall on the right) mid-afternoon while driving to the grocery store. It was a quiet time for driving, the traffic light. I love the shadows cast by the vehicles. The Royal Palace is in Sothearos Boulevard. The pom-pom like trees on the right are palm trees; they are Cambodia’s national tree.
