APAD 034: It’s a Wired World!

Posted by on Apr 12, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, That's My World | 3 comments

Driving on our way back home today, we took a turn into a smaller back road in Tuol Sangke commune (Russei Keo district) where a lot of garment factories are located. We passed by Psah Tuoch (small market) and looking up these familiar sights greet me every time – electric posts (EDC sub-station is just close by) that look like scare-crows and messy and tangled electric wires. I’ve seen worse than this in some parts of the city   (and other Asian cities I’ve been t,o, especially in Manila) and you can only imagine how the electricians work on them!
I remember one of the instances when my husband and I sat in the veranda of our old apartment overlooking the road in Street 63. We witnessed how a rat the size of an adult cat run along electric wires, from our neighbour’s to the apartment across the road – que horror! These wires have become their private super-highways to wherever they wish to go.

APAD 033: A tent – a toilet tent!

Posted by on Apr 11, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Mellow Yellow Monday | 3 comments

My friends Mumsified and PinayWifeSpeaks were  in a secondhand items warehouse recently and enjoying the items sold there when PinayWifeSpeaks called my attention and led me to this tent. A quick look at this tent made us  both giggle as we imagined how a person can sleep in a vertical tent like this. We went home still puzzled at this odd-looking tent.

So when I arrived home I showed the above picture to my husband and got the answer – this is a shower/toilet tent! But of course – shower/toilet tents may not be the most essential camping gear required when you go on camping but it is a very useful piece of to own anyway. If purchased with a portable toilet kit, these pieces of equipment make camping a more pleasant experience.  I would’ve gone back to buy it but we don’t go camping here in Cambodia anyway. There are no public camping sites either.

APAD 031: Wat Phnom

Posted by on Apr 9, 2011 in A Photo a Day, All things Khmer, Cambodia life | 0 comments

That’s the bell-shaped stupa in Wat Phnom reaching out to the sky.
Wat Phnom (Phnom Temple) is a Buddhist temple that sits prominently on top of a tree-covered knoll. Wat Phnom is one of the iconic landmarks in Phnom Penh and is the only hill in the capital.

I have never been inside Wat Phnom but according to travel sites, inside the temple are bright murals that glow in the dark depicting the life of the Lord Buddha.

Many locals flock to the temple to offer incense, flowers, and bananas as well as prayers and ask for favours – for good luck and success in school, business and personal (read: love). There is an “in-house” fortune teller inside the wat and for a small donation, your future will be read through palm-reading or tarot-reading.

Locals come in free; tourists, however are charged with an entrance fee of $1. Be prepared to come with small notes when visiting the wat.
