APAD 015: Dog for rent?

Posted by on Mar 24, 2011 in Addicted to Meme, Signs | 11 comments

No, actually not.
I saw this sign while walking my pet dog Joe earlier today.
The sign is painted on a cement electric post  in Khmer script that says, “Choul”, which means, for rent.
Now it made me wonder, what is for rent? The electric post?

Update: Bora, a former colleague now  based in the US and blogs at Ideas & Thoughts, happened to visit my blog today and corrected me with the translation. The sign above actually means “boom lou“, or plumbing service. Gah, how did I miss that? Khmer alphabet is simple but when you form then into words, that’s when they get so complicated! Perhaps I should bring my eyeglasses next time (tee-hee-hee) to see the signs very clearly. While I’m appalled at the state of my Khmer reading proficiency – imagine if it is a matter of life-and-death sign? I’m glad that it’s straightened out. Thanks, Bora!

That’s one of my pet dogs, Joe. We live on a second-floor apartment and there you see Joe in our veranda with head in between the grills and legs hanging over. He is waiting for his turn to be walked. I took this photo while on my way back from walking my other dog, Max. You can find their blog over at My Dogspot.

APAD 013: Where’s the moto-driver?

Posted by on Mar 22, 2011 in Uncategorized | 8 comments

Amazing how much cargo can a single moto-dop (motorcycle taxi) hold! You can’t even see the driver from behind. In times like this, extra caution must be exercised when following behind, or even when attempting to overtake. You definitely don’t know what the drivers are up to. I just pray that he reaches his destination safe and sound.

APAD 011: Downtown Phnom Penh

Posted by on Mar 20, 2011 in Uncategorized | 2 comments

Driving at the back streets of Phnom Penh on our way home. A lot of Chinese-Khmers live in this area and most of them have small businesses at the ground floor of their apartments – mostly restaurants. Traffic could really get heavy in this area, especially because of the cars and tuktuks that are parked haphazardly on the sides of the streets.
