APAD 042: Colourful trinkets

Posted by on Nov 27, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia life, Cycle 2, Expat Life, sights, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 0 comments

This is one of the reasons why I love visiting the Russian market, aka Psah Tuol Tumpong, these days:

souvenirs from Cambodia, colourful trinkets

These trinkets are lovely! Great as souvenirs to take back home or to give as presents this Christmas holiday.

They’re all so pretty and not to mention cheap. We only went to one shop and the moment we stepped inside, we were transported to a different world. My friend and and I felt like we were inside a candy store and everything there was what we wanted to bring home. We had a difficult time choosing amongst piles of vintage necklaces and bangles as well as earrings with semi-precious stones. We voved to go back next time and spend more time going through the displays.

APAD 038: White-lipped viper in the city

white-lipped viper

White-lipped vipers have a vibrant green colour. A few paces away, I thought it was a green ribbon.

Saw this dead snake lying on the footpath while walking the dog last Thursday morning. My husband went back to take a photo of it and searched on Google to find out what kind of snake it was. It turns out it was a white-lipped viper. IN THE CITY. Scary.

APAD 036: Pretty Cambodian silk scarves

Posted by on Nov 19, 2012 in Cambodia life, Cycle 2, sights, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 3 comments

Locally-made scarves and other products made from Cambodian silk are best-sellers in markets like Tuol Tompong. They come in gorgeous colours, patterns, and textures that appeal to a lot of tourists. Some are silky smooth while others have the roughness of a raw silk.

Cambodian silk scarves

You can find these scarves, and more souvenirs, at Tuol Tumpong market. It is also known as the Russian market.

Cambodia’s silk is amongst the best in the world and the tradition of silk production can be traced back during the great Angkorian times. However, this industry was destroyed during the long years of war, particularly during the reign of the Khmer Rouge where everything was demolished due to “cultural cleansing”. These days the silk industry is being revived and millions of dollars were pumped into this but it is still struggling due to a lot of factors.
