APAD 178: Hello and goodbye, setting sun!

Posted by on Oct 14, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Skywatch Friday | 4 comments

Today, the sun finally came out so we took advantage of the good weather. We did the laundry – loads of it – and after that, it was a day out with my husband since today is his day off from work. When we got home, we had coffee while enjoying this beautiful sunset view from our veranda.

Have a great Friday, everyone!

APAD 172: Flooded ricefields in the Cambodian countryside

Posted by on Oct 7, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Skywatch Friday, travel | 7 comments

Due to heavy monsoon rains in the countryside, most ricefields have already been flooded and damaged, like the one below. Dotting the flooded area are sugar palm trees.

The ricefield  looks beautiful, isn’t it?
To many unknowing foreigners, this is a very exotic, postcard-pretty sight.

But – and a big BUT – rice plants that are submerged in water for more than two days  will die. And if this happens to the rice crop of the many affected farmers around the country it is going to be a huge disaster! I couldn’t help but imagine how many families will experience food shortage and, possibly, starvation.

Please do give something. Contact the Cambodian Red Cross or any non-government organisations, both local and international, to inquire how you can help.

APAD 167: And it’s still raining…

Posted by on Sep 30, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, buildings, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Phnom Penh, sights, Skywatch Friday, What's On in Cambodia | 1 comment

Yesterday, that is.
It’s pouring rain non-stop. I wished the rain would stop because the water has already overflowed on to the road. Many places in Phnom Penh are already underwater.

APAD 160: Great day to visit the wat

Posted by on Sep 16, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, festivals, new temples, Phnom Penh, sights, Skywatch Friday | 8 comments

It’s the third day of the Pchum Ben Festival (Festival of the Dead, or, the Festival of the Ancestors) and the faithful Buddhists troop to the wats (temples) to offer food, incense and prayers for their dead family members and relatives.

It was a beautiful warm, sunny day this morning – perfect for visiting the wat. But later in the day, the sky darkened, the heavens opened and out came the rain. People scampered everywhere looking for shelter. It was a mad, mad dash!

APAD 142: Blue sky

Posted by on Aug 19, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, downtown, people, sights, Skywatch Friday, transportation | 0 comments

The sky is as blue as it can be and clouds as puffy as a cotton candy. There is certainly no chance of rain today. Or, is there?
