APAD 340: Olympic egg race-car

I sat in my husband’s class last Friday and they were making something. The students were only given several pairs of chopsticks, drinking straws, four discarded CDs and pieces of paper to design and build a car. So what were the results?

This one’s my favourite of all:

Brilliant car design by Mak Saindor, a 13 year old student.

I just love the creativity here, good design, and runs fast enough. Love the details as well, from the Cambodian flag to the reference to the Olympic Games.

I’ve got to hand the GOLD medal to the student who made this!

APAD 339: A magical moment

Posted by on Aug 3, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, sights, That's My World, travel, What's On in Cambodia | 13 comments

Here’s another sundog photo my husband took last Sunday. I know, I could not get over the giddiness yet 🙂 so pardon me.

A magical (double) sundog moment for me right there.

Sundogs are not so common – but are also not rare – in my part of the world. I have read stories about sundogs, it’s mystical nature and the many beliefs of many cultures surrounding this natural phenomenon. Seeing one for the first time last week was just pure magic. I am still in awe.

Thank you, Mother Nature, for letting me see one of your grand displays. Truly a memorable one.

You can find the story here at Sreisaat Adventures.

APAD 338: Costume rental

Traditional Cambodian weddings are colourful and extravagant. The bride and groom wear matching colourful outfits and they can change outfits several times during the whole day of ceremony and reception. These outfits are, more often than not, rented from a wedding shop like the one in this picture.

Weddings are serious business in Cambodia.

To those adventurous, there are photo studios in Phnom Penh that offer costumed portraits. If you love dressing up, like some tourists I know, have your photos taken garbed in Cambodian traditional costumes as souvenir. Many of my expat friends have already done it but I haven’t yet. I’m considering it though.

APAD 336: Sundog glory

One Sunday mid-morning, when my husband, brother and I were outdoors flying kites in Prey Sbov, just outside of Phnom Penh, Mother Nature treated us with this spectacular solar phenomenon:

Is this a double sundog? What a stunning creation of Mother Nature!
Originally posted to my other blog.

That’s a full sundog and a circumzenith arc.
It was my first time to see a sundog and I took it as an opportunity to record this phenomenon in pictures. Other photos can be found in my blog, Sreisaat Adventures.

It is not common in this part of the world but also not rare as there have been sightings in the past. Perhaps we’re too busy to notice, eh?

APAD 334: Shop six-six-six

Posted by on Jul 26, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Signs, Signs of Times, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 4 comments

A shop called 666 selling secondhand cars in Phnom Penh. Okaaay, that doesn’t sound right, i.e., if you know the story behind these, uhmm, dreaded numbers.

Cars for sale at Shop 666. Would you buy one if the shop offers a huge discount?

In popular culture, apart from the number “13”, no other number elicits fear more than 666. But why are we scared of these numbers? Superstition, maybe.

I know it could not be, but IF 666 starts appearing on my digital clock, darn, I’d be scared sh*tless!

APAD 333: The morning after…

A huge fire razed a neighbourhood in Tuol Sangke district of Phnom Penh, less than five kilometers from ours. The morning after the incident, we saw the house-owners literally picking up the pieces of what’s left of their homes.
