A  stone statue of the mythical solar lion is silhouetted against the sky at dusk. Photo taken at the Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap province,  Cambodia.

There are no lions in Southeast Asia but in Cambodia and Thailand, the mythical solar lion is a common fixture. In Cambodia they are found in Khmer temples and monuments, usually at the entrance gates. They stand guard together with the lunar mythical animal, the seven-headed nagas or serpents.

APAD 232: Happy new year!

Posted by on Jan 1, 2012 in A Photo a Day, All things Khmer, What's On in Cambodia | 0 comments

This is not a photograph but rather a postcard that I saw from my collection. It shows a fantastic fireworks display over the world-renowned Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the pride of the Cambodians. I thought this is a fantastic entry to begin the new year, 2012.

To all my friends here at Inside Cambodia, happy new year!

May we all have a great year ahead, filled with fantastic moments and pictures to blog about.

APAD 208: The Western Baray

Posted by on Nov 25, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, people, That's My World, travel, What's On in Cambodia | 3 comments

A beautiful sunny weather.  Skies covered with thin clouds. Plus the boy who tagged along on a short cruise of the Western Baray.

The Western Baray, or West Baray, is an old, old, old water reservoir and the largest found inside the Angkor Wat complex. Its waters are contained by tall earthen dikes. In the center of the baray is the West Mebon, a Hindu temple built on an artificial island.

Early French experts believed the West Baray to have functioned as a vast holding tank for water that fed irrigation canals in dry times, allowing multiple crops of rice each year. Many later studies, however, theorize that the baray had mainly symbolic functions, serving as a vast earthly depiction of the Hindu Sea of Creation, with the West Mebon temple at its center. Up to now, the reservoir is still full of water and has become an attraction drawing mostly local crowd (and sometimes, foreign tourists, too) for swimming and boat rides.

APAD 173: Hey, WAIT up!

Posted by on Oct 8, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, travel | 3 comments

This week’s theme over at Photo Hunt is quite challenging – WAITING. I could not find something that would fit into this theme so I had to really dig deeper into my photo vault and – voila!

Taken inside Banteay Kdei, one of the ancient temples found inside the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province. Banteay Kdei is one of the lesser known temples there – and very few people go there – but it’s as old and as interesting as the more popular Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm temples. We were hopping from one temple to another and I could not keep up with my husband. He was too busy taking pictures to even realise I was lagging behind. I didn’t like being left alone amidst the rubbles. It felt odd and eerie, even at broad daylight, so I yelled at him to wait for me. And that’s how this photo was taken.
