Wordless Wednesday: Hot chilis

I recently bought a kilo of Thai dragon chili peppers from the local market near me. I am going to make my favourite sweet chili sauce using a recipe I found on the Internet. My local vegetable suki gave me a good price for it — 5,000riels a kilo, which is about US$1.25. If all goes well with the sauce, then I’ll be making some more!

I spread the chili peppers on the table and was amazed at the variation of colours!

The peppers could grow up to four inches long. They start out as green and mature to a beautiful bright red. In between, you can see the colours on the picture 🙂 I’m saving some seeds for planting!

In other news, I met an old friend at the music center near me. The center also sells used musical instruments from Japan and I bumped into her, with her cute son in tow, amongst the rows of digital pianos. They, too, were just looking around to while their time away. I was happy to learn that they live in the same district as I so we’d be seeing more often. Since they were already on their way out, we exchanged numbers and promised to meet up for coffee next week. Can’t wait.

Monday Mellow Yellows: Wat Ounalom

My sister arrived from the Philippines last week for a whirl-wind visit of Cambodia. She was with a friend and for one week they went temple-hopping in Siem Reap and shopping in Phnom Penh. Hah, that’s a very simplistic way of describing their trip. I haven’t seen her for the longest time and I was happy to have hosted her here in the city. She also brought a care package from my parents (thank you) and the new toys I bought online (brush pens and some music stuff!). The toys were sent to her via the store’s Free Shipping promo.

Anyways, so as the host I took her and her friend around the city’s main sights as well as popular markets. I wanted them to see a bit of culture and tradition so we popped in to Wat Ounalom temple which is just a walking distance from their hotel. Luckily, the whole kingdom is observing the Pchum Ben festival so the wats are alive and festively decorated, with smoke from the lit incense sticks wafting in the air. We spent a bit of time observing this unique Khmer tradition –  watching faithful locals in their Sunday best (usually white) bring food to offer to the monks, give alms and say prayers for their ancestors. Of course, we took pictures, too.

Monday Mellow Yellows: Good morning, Vietnam!

Ho Chi Minh City is a delightful place to go to. There is so much happening in every direction that you’ll surely miss a thing when you blink. The sea of motorists – and the sound of the horns – is just overwhelming.

However, robbery/snatching is a major dampener to a tourists visiting there! So please, please, be very careful when going there. Leave your valuables at the hotel. Don’t trot around with your fancy phones and camera. Take it from me. It happened to me ten years ago when I first went there. It happened again to my friend on our visit last month. Apparently, some things never change 🙁

I wonder if this yellow postbox has a different lease rate compared to the regular wooden boxes (partially seen) like mine.
