APAD 015: Dog for rent?

Posted by on Mar 24, 2011 in Addicted to Meme, Signs | 11 comments

No, actually not.
I saw this sign while walking my pet dog Joe earlier today.
The sign is painted on a cement electric post  in Khmer script that says, “Choul”, which means, for rent.
Now it made me wonder, what is for rent? The electric post?

Update: Bora, a former colleague now  based in the US and blogs at Ideas & Thoughts, happened to visit my blog today and corrected me with the translation. The sign above actually means “boom lou“, or plumbing service. Gah, how did I miss that? Khmer alphabet is simple but when you form then into words, that’s when they get so complicated! Perhaps I should bring my eyeglasses next time (tee-hee-hee) to see the signs very clearly. While I’m appalled at the state of my Khmer reading proficiency – imagine if it is a matter of life-and-death sign? I’m glad that it’s straightened out. Thanks, Bora!

  1. that's pretty cute writing. http://ewok1993.wordpress.com

  2. Unusual to see an advertisement painted on concrete like this! And loved the story that evolved around taking this picture!

  3. Isn't blogging fun? You learn so much… These "graffiti" ads are all over Asia. 🙂

  4. I've learned on these meme's that I've made a mistake that somebody will gently provide a correction. I want to know what the dog is looking at.

  5. That is even funnier, with your dog by the post…

  6. oh a plumbing service–that makes sense…but at Joe's eye level?:p

  8. An interesting sigh find nonetheless. As for your dogs plumbing, I don't thing we want to discuss that issue. 🙂

  9. That was supposed to be "sign find". I can't even type correctly in English, my one and only language.

  10. @Marvin, you're funny! @Yogi, yes you are right. And I am always open for corrections. My dog was actually looking at another male dog on the other side of the road :)@Luna, funny isn't it? @Francisca, yes these signs, including Engrish ones, are all over! Thank you all for coming. See you next week 🙂
