This is Cambodia’s National Assembly building in Phnom Penh. One of the impressive Khmer-style buildings in the capital. It is located next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, another Khmer-style government building. While these buildings are really fantastic, I don’t understand why they were built next to a hotel-casino.

APAD 076: Moto wash

The numbers of motorcycle in Phnom Penh alone is pegged at about half a million {source: me, bwahahhaha}. Can you imagine the scene during the rush hour?

And with such number, the demand for moto wash is huge therefore a lot of locals are cashing in on the demand. You can see signs like this – some hand-painted like you see in the pic, and others, digitally-printed – everywhere. A car wash business is a very simple and easy business that can be set up at home with very little effort and with equipment as basic as high-pressure water hose, soap, and plenty of rags/cloths.

APAD 075: Bitter gourd

Yes, they are edible. Despite their bitter taste, bitter gourds lowering blood sugar levels, rich in folate, Vit. C and are excellent sources of flavonoids such as beta-carotene and a lot more minerals.

APAD 074: Night lights

It’s the peak of the tourist season here in Cambodia and one can see signs of them everywhere. I ventured out three weeks ago to meet up with my newly-wed brother and his blushing wife at the Bopha-Titanic restaurant on the banks of the river. As expected, the place was packed with foreign and local tourists but we were able to find a table right by the deck/terrace overlooking this fantastic view:

These are some of the boats that dock in Phnom Penh for the night. They carry passengers to and from Siem Reap.

I can understand why this restaurant is teeming with diners especially at night. From where we were, we enjoyed this sweeping riverside view and the food was fantastic. Well, almost. Our pleasant experience that night was ruined by the food server’s nasty attitude when we told him he gave us the wrong food.

APAD 073: Ambulant sellers

They are your friendly basket-sellers. I took this photo while we were driving to Kep one weekend. They are a common sight in the countryside but don’t be surprised to see them in the city, too. Ambulant sellers like them are still plying their trade in this manner despite the emergence of new markets and air-conditioned malls.

It’s a lot of hard work but it’s a job to do and earns them money for their families.

These baskets made from indigenous materials found in their villages are most likely made by the village women and sold to other places.
