APAD 327: Weekend sand safari

… having fun at one of the reclaimed areas just outside Phnom Penh. Look, Mum, I can jump! Lol.

This photo was taken in one of the sites outside of Phnom Penh in Kien Svay district where we flew our kite last weekend. It is a reclaimed area (very sandy) and work seems to have been stopped at the moment as there were no signs of construction going on. Just a huge reclaimed area. Well, good for us.

Although we had a frustrating day with the kite as there was not enough wind, we had a blast playing in the sand, instead. Going up the sand dunes/hills and then run down again is one of the games I used to play when I was a kid. But being a klutz and for someone who’s running experience these days is limited to chasing my dogs out of the house for chewing my favourite Chucks, the gravity pulled me as I ran down and fell down on my hands and started crawling to reach the bottom. Errm, embarrassing but lots of fun – I was my 8year old self again.
It was certainly one way to play there and we (my brother and I) did just that. Now, if only own an ATV…. can you imagine what fun we would have?
APAD 326: Watch out, boys!
Last Friday was kite-flying with the kids at Aziza’s Place, a non-government organisation providing a half-way house for underprivileged kids in Phnom Penh.
These two boys immediately set their kites in the air and are too engrossed in what they were doing. Neither of them noticed this road compactor going in their direction. But don’t worry, no one was harmed. The driver stopped in that very spot you see on the picture and drove away to let the boys enjoy their kites.
Here comes the road compactor, boys.

APAD 325: Toilet duck versus H1N1
This advertising sign sits at the junction of Monivong and Yugoslavie Boulevards (St. 214). The sign is positioned on a very strategic location right along one of Phnom Penh’s busiest intersections.
One can’t miss this advertising sign.

The product being advertised is the Toilet Duck, a brand of bathroom and toilet cleaner. The message it is trying to convey is that of cleanliness and hygiene. Although I cannot read the Khmer script, it seems to me that the ad claims to kill not only germs and bacterias but also the H1N1 virus. Oooh, that is such a bold claim, don’t you think so,too? I’m sorry but is it true that toilet cleaners like this can eradicate H1N1 virus? I also find it funny to be using a duck as a brand because ducks aren’t really, errm, clean. They (at least the common ducks I see in my part of the world) eat dirt and all.
The sign certainly is hard to miss. I took this sign about 20meters away while waiting for the traffic lights to turn green. But besides this, the sign also reminds me of the current “new mystery illness” that made it to the international news programmes of CNN and other global news organisations. According to “new” results conducted by health experts, there is no new illness and there is no epidemic in the country. Good news indeed. What affected kids under 7years old was a combination of Enterovirus 71 (the Hand, Foot and Mouth disease virus), dengue and another mild illness that got fatal due to inappropriate medication. APAD 323: Fishers of men
Right across the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh on the riverside is where the Mighty Mekong River and the Tonle Sap merge giving birth to the smaller Bassac River. Also in this location lies a floating fishing community that relies on this rich waters for their livelihood.
The sun is about to set while the fishermen are heading for “work”. I pray each day that they go out there, in the middle of the lake, safely and with enough catch to feed their families and to sell for extra income.
Since the ancient times – and up to this day – the Tonle Sap and Mekong River have enormous supply of fish and other aquatic resources. In the ancient times, they also served as naval battleground between the great Khmer empire and its enemies.
These days, tourists rent boats to cruise along the rivers. To cap the river cruise is the splendid sunset that is best viewed in this location.
