APAD 309: Chaktomuk Conference Hall and Theatre
A lot of tourists opt to skip Phnom Penh to head straight to Siem Reap. They’re missing out on a lot of things, I tell you. A LOT.
Phnom Penh is a vibrant city with a charm and unique character that is worth a visit. Here’s one of those reasons why you should visit the Chaktomuk Conference Hall and Theatre.
Chaktomuk Conference Hall and Theatre is one of the significant examples of Sangkum architecture by none other than, the great,Vann Molyvann.
It was designed by Vann Molyvann and completed in 1961. It reinterprets traditional Khmer elements such as the pointed ‘tower’ and triangle roof forms which open out like a fan seen from above. The Chaktomuk Conference Hall and Theatre is a significant example of post-independence Khmer Architecture. It was originally opened to the public as La Salle de Conférence Chaktomuk. Thirty years or so later, in 1991, it was earmarked for “redevelopment” as a restaurant but was brought back in 1994 as a theatre after a fire gutted down the National Theatre. In 2000, Chaktomuk was refurbished into what it is now – a modern conference centre that provides international-standard facilities for conferences. On occasions, it is still used a venue for special and official programs by some government agencies.
This is a very interesting building, don’t you agree? It is one of my favourite buildings in Phnom Penh.
Architecture-wise, it is very pleasing to the eyes. The lines, shapes, textures, and colours make it so eye-catching. But wait till you see it’s awesome fan-shape from above. Here’s one that I found: Chaktomuk Conference Hall and Theatre via Googlemaps.
APAD 308: Ice cream!
Heat-buster! I had a scoop each of mango and coffee flavours.
I love ice cream! When the summer heat gets too unbearable, there are ice cream shops around the city to beat the heat and just, well chill.
Chill Ice Cream and Coffee Lounge is one of them and they’re easily spotted along the riverside. They have a good selection of ice cream flavours, however, not much to rave about. The ice cream was just alright. They also offer ice cream cakes, coffee and pastries.
APAD 307: Traffic jam on a very hot day
Went out to do some errands this morning but I left the house at the wrong time of the day.
Uh-Oh.
Traffic jam. This is one reason why I don’t really look forward to running errands around the city. It irritates me a lot (when I’m on car that is close to a stand still) knowing that I’m losing time but stop short of complaining and whining lest the negativity spread to my husband and ruin both our day.
What comes to your mind whenever you get caught in a jam and your car is close to a standstill?

APAD 306: S-A-L-E!!!
Shirts cheaper than burgers. Bargain?
There are a lot of bargain sales around Phnom Penh lately. There are hundreds of shops, if not more, selling clothes for men, women, and children all over Phnom Penh. Most are factory overruns and the rest come from Thailand, HK, and even China.
The above men’s shirts cost cost less than a fastfood budget meal. But out of these great number of shirts available, my main concern is not the price itself but getting the best quality out of these selections. If needs a good eye to spot the better ones and lots and lots of patience to go through the lot under the baking sun.
