APAD 155: The red earth

After being powdered by the dust of summer comes the red, sticky mud of the rainy season, particularly in rural Cambodia.

I love the beautiful red clay soil in the countryside. Looks greasy from this angle but, no, it’s the thick, red, muddy road!

The mud is really harsh, and, as you can see, the road is virtually impassable  – sticky, slippery, and will bury your vehicle (and you) if you’re stubborn enough to go on. Our shoes and flip-flops get coated with the sticky soil, and hardens like cement when it dries up, making them impossible to wear again.

This picture was taken in Kep, Cambodia in one of my field activities. I was based there for about 6months in 2006 and, I tell you, the rainy season added more challenge to the already very challenging work we were having at that time.

Huge props to the people on bicycles and motorcycles who patiently ply roads like this during the rainy season.

APAD 154: Self-portrait

… of Paige, the Pajero, that is. Paige is our trusty, 25year-old car that we bought here in Phnom Penh some four years ago. The red light was on and we stopped right n front of this shop.

The sign says it’s a decorative glass shop but because of the sun’s glare and our distance we could not really see what’s inside or what’s behind the glass door except Paige’s reflection.

More signs all over the world at Signs, Signs. Please do have a look.

APAD 152: The floating houses

These are but a few of the boathouses belonging to a floating community along the confluence of Tonle Bassac and Tonle Sap rivers. Watching the boat-people is a quick glimpse of sorts  at the way of life of a floating village in Cambodia.

This is an Our World Tuesday entry. Click on the logo for more pictures of our world.

APAD 151: Fast cars at Legend Cinema

Posted by on Sep 5, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Mellow Yellow Monday, Phnom Penh, What's On in Cambodia | 3 comments

Last Wednesday, I was invited by the nice people at Legend Cinema for the premier screening of the movie, Fast and Furious 5. Th Fast 5 premier also coincided with the premier of Disney Pixar’s Cars 2, for kids and kids-at-heart.  We were happy to see so many cars on display at CitMall’s parking lot as part of its promotional gimmick. Here are two yellow cars  that were on display:

These are only two of the dozens (even more) of cool cars that were on display that day. I chose only these two for my Mellow Yellow Monday entry today.

While this is not the first time I got invited by Legend Cinema (I told you they are very generous) I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation for another movie screening. You know why? Because the movie to be screened stars two tough guys in Hollywood. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. I like them both, they’re ruggedly handsome and cute like teddy bears. I enjoyed the movie because apart from the two – you should watch their attempts at emoting, especially Vin Diesel. LOL. I could not imagine a tough-looking guy turning into a softie. Watching Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson I could not help but giggle because I somehow expected him to raise an eyebrow everytime the camera closes in on his face. What a hoot!

Anyways, to those who are in Phnom Penh, go watch it. It is still showing at Legend Cinema. The action is set in the exotic Brazil, the awesome cars are there, and – I hate to say this – beautiful women, and of course, the oozing machismo. Nevertheless, it is a very entertaining, fun movie.

APAD 150: What good is it for? Part 2

Posted by on Sep 3, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Photo Hunt, sights, Signs, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 2 comments

The part 1 is here.

The following day, I went back to the same market to get a supply of  yarn for my crochet tutorials.  Look what greeted me –

More motorcycles parked under the No Parking sign on broad daylight and for the public to see!

I was tempted to break out in a song beginning with the words in my blog title but…

This is just wrong, plain and simple. Some people think signs are made for everybody

but them.
