This is how a typical wat (temple) in Cambodia looks like. The ceilings and walls are painted with illustrations depicting the life and death of the Lord Buddha. There are golden trees where devotees rub golden (paper) leaves on them. I don’t know what the significance of this but I’ve seen it done on temples. Candles and Buddha images of different sizes and colour are also present, and there is a distinct heady scent coming from the seemingly inexhaustible supply of lighted incense (joss) sticks.

A beautiful sunny day in Phnom Penh, with a bit of cloud formation in the sky. I love passing through Sisowath Quay when it is quiet and virtually empty like this day.

Took this in front of the Royal Palace (you can see the Palace wall on the right) mid-afternoon while driving to the grocery store. It was a quiet time for driving, the traffic light. I love the shadows cast by the vehicles. The Royal Palace is in Sothearos Boulevard. The pom-pom like trees on the right are palm trees; they are Cambodia’s national tree.

This is how Phnom Penh looks like today, on the third and last day of the Khmer New Year celebrations. Most of the people who live and work in Phnom Penh are from the provinces and the Khmer New Year is one big excuse for an exodus back to their hometowns to celebrate the occasion with their families and relatives. The roads are virtually empty and this is one of rare moments that we enjoy the peace and quiet. Come Monday, it will soon be back to the normal hustle-bustle in the capital.
This is my comeback entry to the Photo Hunt. To see more PH participants or details on how to join, please click this link or this one.
