APAD 066: Missing piecesof Cambodia’s national treasures
This is one of the lesser-known temples inside the Angkor Wat complex. I forgot the name of this particular temple, but as you can see, it is still intact save for a few missing pieces.
A closer look at the picture reveals the missing heads of the statues at the entrance. Like the other temples, this one wasn’t spared by the looters. The heads are probably displayed thousands of miles away from Cambodia, in a posh gallery or museum. I won’t discuss anymore how it reached the other side of the world. Despite the many efforts against looting inside the temples, looting still go on, apparently.

The Electricite du Cambodge sign is an attention-grabber.
I took this while inside a moving car but here’s a closer look at that sign:

Apsaras are celestial dancers in Buddhist folklore. Images of apsaras are carved in the ancient temples of Khmer, particularly in Angkor Wat. Why are they in the company logo of an electric company, that I do not have any idea.

APAD 062: A KHMER temple
It is actually more of a shrine, located in Sisowath Quay, facing the Chroy Changvar Peninsula. On vesak days (Buddhist holy days), people flock to this shrine to light incense and to pray; some leave offerings such as lotus flowers and bananas. The pavillion behind it serves as the main stage during important celebrations, such as the Khmer Water Festival. It is where the King of Cambodia, other royalties, and high-ranking government officials sit to watch the boat-racing competition. More photos at That’s My World

… and waiting to be restored.
Despite the many millions of dollars poured into and countless experts from different countries that raced to help in the restoration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Angkor Wat – there are still other lesser known temples in the complex (but equally fascinating) that lie in shambles waiting to get noticed.
