APAD 162: Royal Palace at night

This is my favourite photo of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh at night. It was taken with my trusty point-and-shoot camera while my husband and I were enjoying  the night river cruise.

The lights decorating the Royal Palace creates a golden (almost embossed) outline of the building amidst the blackness of the night. It was a fantastic sight, almost like something magical and surreal you read about in many fairy tales.

APAD 160: Great day to visit the wat

Posted by on Sep 16, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, festivals, new temples, Phnom Penh, sights, Skywatch Friday | 8 comments

It’s the third day of the Pchum Ben Festival (Festival of the Dead, or, the Festival of the Ancestors) and the faithful Buddhists troop to the wats (temples) to offer food, incense and prayers for their dead family members and relatives.

It was a beautiful warm, sunny day this morning – perfect for visiting the wat. But later in the day, the sky darkened, the heavens opened and out came the rain. People scampered everywhere looking for shelter. It was a mad, mad dash!

APAD 159: The polite tuk-tuk driver

Posted by on Sep 15, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Phnom Penh, sights, Signs, transportation, What's On in Cambodia | 4 comments

I was supposed to post a different photo but this one caught my attention while I was browsing through my twitter page. I just knew I had to post it today:

This sign just says it all!

If you have been to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, you would know how it is being harrassed by persistent tuktuk drivers.  Upon arrival at the bus stations or bus stops, or merely walking down the streets, you cannot escape an awful lot of tuktuk and moto drivers swarming around you (or stalking you) for a ride. I know they have to be in order to make a living but, by golly, it is a traumatic experience even for a resident expat.

APAD 154: Self-portrait

… of Paige, the Pajero, that is. Paige is our trusty, 25year-old car that we bought here in Phnom Penh some four years ago. The red light was on and we stopped right n front of this shop.

The sign says it’s a decorative glass shop but because of the sun’s glare and our distance we could not really see what’s inside or what’s behind the glass door except Paige’s reflection.

APAD 151: Fast cars at Legend Cinema

Posted by on Sep 5, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia, Cambodia life, Mellow Yellow Monday, Phnom Penh, What's On in Cambodia | 3 comments

Last Wednesday, I was invited by the nice people at Legend Cinema for the premier screening of the movie, Fast and Furious 5. Th Fast 5 premier also coincided with the premier of Disney Pixar’s Cars 2, for kids and kids-at-heart.  We were happy to see so many cars on display at CitMall’s parking lot as part of its promotional gimmick. Here are two yellow cars  that were on display:

These are only two of the dozens (even more) of cool cars that were on display that day. I chose only these two for my Mellow Yellow Monday entry today.

While this is not the first time I got invited by Legend Cinema (I told you they are very generous) I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation for another movie screening. You know why? Because the movie to be screened stars two tough guys in Hollywood. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. I like them both, they’re ruggedly handsome and cute like teddy bears. I enjoyed the movie because apart from the two – you should watch their attempts at emoting, especially Vin Diesel. LOL. I could not imagine a tough-looking guy turning into a softie. Watching Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson I could not help but giggle because I somehow expected him to raise an eyebrow everytime the camera closes in on his face. What a hoot!

Anyways, to those who are in Phnom Penh, go watch it. It is still showing at Legend Cinema. The action is set in the exotic Brazil, the awesome cars are there, and – I hate to say this – beautiful women, and of course, the oozing machismo. Nevertheless, it is a very entertaining, fun movie.
