I was at my younger brother’s apartment a week ago in Boeungkengkang district for a chitchat and snacks. I used to live in this area back in the mid-2000s and I kinda missed the neighbourhood – it was once touted as the NGO (non-governmental organisation) area. When I looked outside from his window – he lives on the 3rd floor unit – this view welcomed me. Amazing how the landscape has changed in that span of time. Before only the tall trees dominated the landscape and you can see rooftops and triangles as far as your eyes can see. But now, the trees had been cut and the old apartment buildings were torn down and replaced by these tall, ugly (serviced) apartments that cater to mostly expats.

Intermittent rains caused this open sewer to overflow to the main road. Not a pleasant sight, the water is brown and dirty – just look at the flotsam and jetsam there – and the stench is overpowering.

It feels good to come home! Taken in December 2007 after more than two weeks of work-related travel (Malaysia and Nepal). In my case, home for now – and in the last 11 years – is Phnom Penh.
I was so excited to be home that time, having narrowly avoided the Christmas rush – what a huge relief it was! To keep my excitement at bay, I kept on looking out the plane’s window, and down, to see the landscape. I think I did a pretty good job in capturing the chocolate landscape that looks like a giant jigsaw puzzle. And look, I even captured the shadow of the airplane. This is one of my favourite pictures!
This is my comeback entry (for the nth time) at Photo Hunt. More Photo Hunters are found at

This is one of the lesser-known temples inside the Angkor Wat complex. I forgot the name of this particular temple, but as you can see, it is still intact save for a few missing pieces.
A closer look at the picture reveals the missing heads of the statues at the entrance. Like the other temples, this one wasn’t spared by the looters. The heads are probably displayed thousands of miles away from Cambodia, in a posh gallery or museum. I won’t discuss anymore how it reached the other side of the world. Despite the many efforts against looting inside the temples, looting still go on, apparently.

Looking out. |
This is a derelict government building in the coastal town of Kep. Kep, in its heydays, was the prime weekend getaway location of Phnom Penh’s elite and its French colonisers. Opulent villas were built there – including the Royal Family’s vacation house – but all were abandoned in the 70s during the Khmer Rouge regime. Nowadays, these villas stood there, crumbled and ruined, as witnesses of Kep’s fomer glory and the cruelty of the Khmer Rouge era.
