That is a good question. The sign seems to be out-of-place here.

Yes, the whole country is celebrating the Khmer New Year. Today is the second day of the three-day celebration and is called the vanabot. This is the day when Cambodian families go to wats (templse) for a special ceremony for their ancestors. This is also the day when families give or donate something to their less fortunate relatives and neighbours. It is amazing to note that families, no matter how poor or how limited their resources are, still make sure toshare something to the needy, especially on this day.
This is the third time we are welcoming the new year. The first, being on Jan 1 (international new year’s day), and followed by the Chinese new year.

My husband and I were on our way back home from doing some shopping at the Russian Market when he decided to take another route. If it wasn’t for his brilliant idea to take the back streets of Mao Tse Tung Boulevard, we wouldn’t have seen the above sign. It made our day 🙂
What kind of place is a “loandry”?
I’m sure a lot of you have funny ideas and interpretations brewing in your head, come and share it with me!

No, actually not.
I saw this sign while walking my pet dog Joe earlier today.
The sign is painted on a cement electric post in Khmer script that says, “Choul”, which means, for rent.
Now it made me wonder, what is for rent? The electric post?

Update: Bora, a former colleague now based in the US and blogs at
Ideas & Thoughts, happened to visit my blog today and corrected me with the translation. The sign above actually means “
boom lou“, or plumbing service. Gah, how did I miss that? Khmer alphabet is simple but when you form then into words, that’s when they get so complicated! Perhaps I should bring my eyeglasses next time (tee-hee-hee) to see the signs very clearly. While I’m appalled at the state of my Khmer reading proficiency – imagine if it is a matter of life-and-death sign? I’m glad that it’s straightened out. Thanks, Bora!
