APAD 030: Man jeans

The other week my husband and I went to Sorya Mall to look for a nice pair of jeans for him. It was a challenge as most of the available items are for the younger ones. We went to a department store and had our hopes up when we saw the sign:

But it was quickly dashed. The “man jeans” are not really for men. They’re small (in women’s sizes), short (in length) and are high-waisted.

APAD 018: Sports jerseys

These jackets are selling like hotcakes. A lot of young local Cambodians snap these jackets. They’re not secondhand items, they overruns from the factories just next door this shop. For $9 I’m not a taker. It is still too much, in my opinion.

They’re factory overruns, not secondhand stuff.

Would you buy one yourself?
If the seller agreed to $4, I would’ve got one for myself. I’d choose the Spain jacket, of course. I’m an avid fan of Rafael Nadal, the tennis player 🙂

APAD 354: Spirit houses

Golden spirit houses are a common fixture everywhere in Cambodia.

There are no fastfood restaurants with golden arches here yet but we do have lots of establishments that have golden spirit houses at their entrances.

Spirit houses are common fixtures here even in shopping malls. Everyday before stores or shops open to the public, the owners or staff light incense sticks and offer prayers as well as fruits to their dead ancestors to give them good sales, good luck and happiness.

APAD 329: Buckwheat fiasco

Posted by on Jul 19, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia life, Expat Life, food, Signs of Times | 9 comments

We make our bread at home and, after several experimentation, I came to a conclusion that French brands of flour are the best for bread-making. One day in the grocery, my husband and I found this flour.  I normally use white flour. However, I have heard about buckwheat flour being healthier compared to the regular white flour  (100% gluten free, too).  The French use buckwheat to make savoury pancakes, pasta, gruel, cakes and the famous  “crêpe bretonne”.  Intrigued, I picked one pack to try.

Farine de Sarrasin, aka, buckwheat flour

It was a disaster! Lol. It didn’t turn out right – the batter looked normal but it was sticky and difficult to knead. I checked the internet and found out that cooking with 100% buckwheat will result to a tough and spongy texture. It has to be used together with white flour or wheat flour. I am so embarrassed at my ineptitude, lol. But I can always make it better next time, no?
