Yes, the whole country is celebrating the Khmer New Year. Today is the second day of the three-day celebration and is called the vanabot. This is the day when Cambodian families go to wats (templse) for a special ceremony for their ancestors. This is also the day when families give or donate something to their less fortunate relatives and neighbours. It is amazing to note that families, no matter how poor or how limited their resources are, still make sure toshare something to the needy, especially on this day.
This is the third time we are welcoming the new year. The first, being on Jan 1 (international new year’s day), and followed by the Chinese new year.

Driving on our way back home today, we took a turn into a smaller back road in Tuol Sangke commune (Russei Keo district) where a lot of garment factories are located. We passed by Psah Tuoch (small market) and looking up these familiar sights greet me every time – electric posts (EDC sub-station is just close by) that look like scare-crows and messy and tangled electric wires. I’ve seen worse than this in some parts of the city (and other Asian cities I’ve been t,o, especially in Manila) and you can only imagine how the electricians work on them!
I remember one of the instances when my husband and I sat in the veranda of our old apartment overlooking the road in Street 63. We witnessed how a rat the size of an adult cat run along electric wires, from our neighbour’s to the apartment across the road – que horror! These wires have become their private super-highways to wherever they wish to go.

My friends
Mumsified and
PinayWifeSpeaks were in a secondhand items warehouse recently and enjoying the items sold there when PinayWifeSpeaks called my attention and led me to this tent. A quick look at this tent made us both giggle as we imagined how a person can sleep in a vertical tent like this. We went home still puzzled at this odd-looking tent.
So when I arrived home I showed the above picture to my husband and got the answer – this is a shower/toilet tent! But of course – shower/toilet tents may not be the most essential camping gear required when you go on camping but it is a very useful piece of to own anyway. If purchased with a portable toilet kit, these pieces of equipment make camping a more pleasant experience. I would’ve gone back to buy it but we don’t go camping here in Cambodia anyway. There are no public camping sites either.
