APAD 321: The flight of the delta

Posted by on Jul 6, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia life, Expat Life, sights, That's My World | 7 comments

For the first time, I flew a kite last week. As in, on my own, without supervision. It was a quick decision and a good one at that. The weather cooperated, as you can see, and the clouds were giving us a good show! This is the delta kite that I flew. It’s made by my husband from materials bought locally.

Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s a delta kite! What a fabulous sky as background for the delta kite.

The kite measures about 3meters in length and 1.5meters in height, and weighs around 600grams. Pretty big, alright but it was very light. It was up in the air, soaring up to probably a hundred meters, and it stayed there for a long time. Needless to say, I came home with my skin darker than before and with a tan line to boot. But it was fun.

APAD 320: The Winking Tomato Bank

This sign made us U-turn just because…

The Tomato Specialized Bank building in Phnom Penh.

This is Korean-owned and  one of the recent additions to the Cambodian banking scene. What it specializes in though I do not have the slightest clue. I do however think that the logo – a winking tomato – is cute . ^_^

Tell me, with the recent crash of the banking and financial systems globally, would you entrust your hard-earned money in this bank named after, errr, a fruit, or, a vegetable? Can’t make up my mind but you know what I’m getting at, lol.

APAD 318: Street sights

Posted by on Jul 3, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, sights, That's My World | 3 comments

The Sisowath Quay and the riverside areas in Phnom Penh are two of the places where a large concentration of bars and restaurants are located. During daytime, it looks like this. Traffic could be worse at certain times of the day.

Typical street scene in Phnom Penh’s riverside, taken just last month.

The moment the sun goes down this part of the city comes alive as tourists and locals and expats alike come down here for a good night out. Across the establishments,  the riverfront has also become more popular to promenaders and health buffs as there are several exercise machines installed there recently.

APAD 316: Sunset over Tuol Kork

Posted by on Jun 29, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, Expat Life, sights, That's My World | 4 comments

Saturday afternoons have become kite-flying time for us in the hood. When I say “us” it includes the neighbourhood kids who are in my husband’s English class and their siblings, apart from me, my husband and my younger brother.

Last week we started at 5.30pm. Surprisingly the sun was still up. The kids love this weekly activity because it not only engages them to speak English but they also get to fly kites (made by my husband) and chase them while flying low. It is a different kind of thrill for them, something these kids have not done as they are mostly occupied with computer and video games at home.

While they were busy running around, I noticed the beautiful sky. The sun’s golden rays were starting to fade as darkness started to creep in to make way for the darkness to envelop the sky.

Love the silhouette of the houses against the dramatic sky.

We’re doing it again tomorrow. I hope it doesn’t rain like last week so I can take another beautiful sunset.

APAD 315: Masks

Posted by on Jun 28, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, sights, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 10 comments

This big event happened several weeks ago – a gathering of 40 artists from Cambodia and other countries from all kinds of backgrounds – painting, photography, graffiti and sculpture.

The Cambodia Mask Project supports the up and coming talented young artists.

This is a yearly initiative aimed at showcasing the talents and raising support for the young up and coming artists in Cambodia. These young artists are talented and full of unique ideas but could not start a project due to lack of funds.

I missed it this year but, hopefully, I’ll be able to catch it next year.

APAD 313: Apartment buildings in Phnom Penh

Posted by on Jun 26, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, sights, That's My World | 2 comments

These are just one of the old apartment buildings in central Phnom Penh. Most apartment buildings in the city are said to be built in the 1960s. Generally a “shop house-style” characterized by deep narrow apartments made up of a combined ground-floor business-front and upstairs residence, with similar layouts consisting of a living room, kitchen and bathroom at the back and one or two bedrooms in the middle.

Apartment buildings in Phnom Penh are commonly 3-5 stories tall and with a balcony.

As you can see these apartments have been re-painted, there are still more buildings that need a bit of sprucing up.
