APAD 343: Seriously?

Posted by on Aug 9, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, sights, Signs of Times, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 12 comments

At the outset I have to say that these photos aren’t mine but they are circulating around the Cambodian blogosphere. I saw them over Khmer440 and, because of their high amusement value, decided to post them here for this week’s Signs meme instead of the one I already have prepared for posting.

Angry Birds popularity in Cambodia is in an all-time high and everyone is cashin in on it.

Photo Source, above and below: Khmer440

And, as if not enough, someone posted another equally amusing sign…

I wonder if there is a G.O.O.D. school somewhere …

APAD 338: Costume rental

Posted by on Aug 2, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, sights, Signs of Times, That's My World, transportation, travel, What's On in Cambodia | 1 comment

Traditional Cambodian weddings are colourful and extravagant. The bride and groom wear matching colourful outfits and they can change outfits several times during the whole day of ceremony and reception. These outfits are, more often than not, rented from a wedding shop like the one in this picture.

Weddings are serious business in Cambodia.

To those adventurous, there are photo studios in Phnom Penh that offer costumed portraits. If you love dressing up, like some tourists I know, have your photos taken garbed in Cambodian traditional costumes as souvenir. Many of my expat friends have already done it but I haven’t yet. I’m considering it though.

APAD 334: Shop six-six-six

Posted by on Jul 26, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Signs, Signs of Times, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 4 comments

A shop called 666 selling secondhand cars in Phnom Penh. Okaaay, that doesn’t sound right, i.e., if you know the story behind these, uhmm, dreaded numbers.

Cars for sale at Shop 666. Would you buy one if the shop offers a huge discount?

In popular culture, apart from the number “13”, no other number elicits fear more than 666. But why are we scared of these numbers? Superstition, maybe.

I know it could not be, but IF 666 starts appearing on my digital clock, darn, I’d be scared sh*tless!

APAD 329: Buckwheat fiasco

Posted by on Jul 19, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia life, Expat Life, food, Signs of Times | 9 comments

We make our bread at home and, after several experimentation, I came to a conclusion that French brands of flour are the best for bread-making. One day in the grocery, my husband and I found this flour.  I normally use white flour. However, I have heard about buckwheat flour being healthier compared to the regular white flour  (100% gluten free, too).  The French use buckwheat to make savoury pancakes, pasta, gruel, cakes and the famous  “crêpe bretonne”.  Intrigued, I picked one pack to try.

Farine de Sarrasin, aka, buckwheat flour

It was a disaster! Lol. It didn’t turn out right – the batter looked normal but it was sticky and difficult to knead. I checked the internet and found out that cooking with 100% buckwheat will result to a tough and spongy texture. It has to be used together with white flour or wheat flour. I am so embarrassed at my ineptitude, lol. But I can always make it better next time, no?

APAD 325: Toilet duck versus H1N1

Posted by on Jul 12, 2012 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, Signs of Times, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 5 comments

This advertising sign sits at the junction of Monivong and Yugoslavie Boulevards (St. 214). The sign is positioned on a very strategic location right along one of Phnom Penh’s busiest intersections.

One can’t miss this advertising sign.

Close up view of the sign.

The product being advertised is the Toilet Duck, a brand of bathroom and toilet cleaner. The message it is trying to convey is that of cleanliness and hygiene. Although I cannot read the Khmer script, it seems to me that the ad claims to kill not only germs and bacterias but also the H1N1 virus. Oooh, that is such a bold claim, don’t you think so,too? I’m sorry but is it true that toilet cleaners like this can eradicate H1N1 virus? I also find it funny to be using a duck as a brand because ducks aren’t really, errm, clean. They (at least the common ducks I see in my part of the world) eat dirt and all.

The sign certainly is hard to miss. I took this sign about 20meters away while waiting for the traffic lights to turn green. But besides this, the sign also reminds me of the current “new mystery illness” that made it to the international news programmes of CNN and other global news organisations. According to “new” results conducted by health experts, there is no new illness and there is no epidemic in the country. Good news indeed. What affected kids under 7years old was a combination of Enterovirus 71 (the Hand, Foot and Mouth disease virus), dengue and another mild illness that got fatal due to inappropriate medication. See more about this here.
