Monday Mellow Yellows: Dried fish

My younger brother returned to Cambodia from a two-week holiday in the Philippines. He brought back several kilos of dried fish and divided it amongst ourselves.

Don’t get me wrong, there are dried fish available here but they’re mostly freshwater fish. I miss the saltwater fish from the Philippines and it’s always a welcome and a special treat whenever my parents would send us some. A taste of home, so to speak.

When kept for a long time, even in a moist-free container, dried fish tend to grow molds. So what I do is take them out every now and then and hang them under direct sunlight to dry and get as much air as possible.

Hanging fish and chili peppers to dry.

Hanging fish to dry. I think the fly is more attracted to the scent of red chili peppers more than the dried fish. Odd.

I didn’t have any hooks but my husband made me one – a DIY hook made from an old, plastic hanger 🙂 And I reused the net bags (used previously to hold onions and potatoes) from the grocery.
Even though my husband thinks the dried fish smell like a dirty sock, and could envelope the house with its “nasty” odour, he doesn’t mind me having them occasionally at meal times.

Signs, signs: Burger house

I’m still on holiday mode. We are still enjoying the chilly weather in the Penh. Down under, the 2015 Australian Open is underway. Which means, I’m glued to my seat watching my favourite tennis players battle it out in grueling tennis action. Since I am mostly watching via live streaming online, I needed new headphones! I asked my husband to drive me to any electronics store in town and found this nice K240 model, a studio headphone, sort of. Just plug it in and you get a really nice sound.

Pardon the blabber. Here’s my Signs entry for this week:

Mike's Burger House Camko City

Our go-to place for the best burger in town.

Arguably the best place for American-style fast-food burgers in Phnom Penh.

Monday Mellow Yellows: Knick-knacks at the counter

Posted by on Jan 19, 2015 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia life, food, sights, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 3 comments

Hello and Happy New Year.

It took me awhile to go back to blogging. I wanted a looooong holiday before beginning another year of photos. I spent a long time re-organising my craft room-cum-home office. I re-arranged the furniture and brought in the secondhand table with drawers (it’s massive) and cabinet organizers where my stuff will finally be organised and kept. My vintage sewing machine is still here, hopefully, it won’t be gathering dust this year as I plan on cranking in some simple sewing work. I also have calligraphy tools which were sent (presents) from my baby sister. It is my goal that I’d be good at calligraphy and, perhaps, get commissioned to do some calligraphy works this year 🙂

After huffing and puffing from all the lifting furniture and dusting and re-organising, my husband treated me to a burger meal. Where else but, of course, at our favourite burger joint in town.

The counter, from where I’m sitting. Lots of yellow knick-knacks displayed there.

This is Mike’s Burger House in Camko City. This is the second branch and still the best place to find American-style fast-food burgers in Phnom Penh.
