NO PARKING. Really?
Not many people pay attention to signs in the streets, buildings, etc. Like above. Took this photo when we were driving up to the parking space on the 5th floor of the O’Russey market in Phnom Penh.

The sign that never fails to send my salivary glands into a frenzy! |
A new find – this noodle-house is a gem! My fellow foodie and I were craving for noodles after watching a movie last week. We consulted our pocket guide and decided to try out this noodle-house along the riverside. With that in mind we hailed a tuk-tuk and directed the driver to go to the riverside. When we reached Street 130, we got off the tuktuk still not knowing where exactly the restaurant is. So, we just wandered off the Psah Kandal 1 area despite the heat. When we saw this sign, we knew right away that this was where we wanted to be – and it’s going to be in our list of great and
cheap eats in Phnom Penh. The Noodle House is sort of a street-side cafe with a cosy, friendly atmosphere. They serve all kinds of Asian noodles, especially
la mien, or the Chinese pulled-noodles, and they are made fresh everyday. The menu is still small but diverse enough that my friend and I vowed to come back to sample each item in their menu. And oh, the smoothies are a must-try! This street-side noodle-house-cum-cafe is located at the ground floor of a newly-refurbished French colonial style apartment.

I’m a noodle-person. Fried, braised, cold, hot, noodle soup, curry noodles – you name it, I’m all for it. Good thing I’m living in the right continent. This sign has a Pavlov effect on me every time! lol.

Sign reads: Damnak Chang’eur District Office
The smaller sign: Cultural Commission of Khan (district) Damnak Chang’eur
Back in 2006, I arrived in the rural town of Kep town, about 200kms southeast of the capital, to initiate contact with the district and commune officials in Damnak Chang’eur district. It meant visiting the district, commune, and village officials in their respective offices, gathering information and permission needed to establish a rural ICT project.
The building behind the sign became my office as the district governor of Damnak Chang’eur provided two rooms for our project (right side of the photo). It was renovated, furnished with the necessary office furniture and equipments, and was connected to the Internet. It has become the meeting venue for most of our important assemblies and trainings. More rooms were provided for our project which we made into telecentre of sorts open to the residents of Damnak Chang’eur district. It has several computer sets with Internet connection (free access to villagers), with VoIP capability for villagers to contact relatives in Phnom Penh and other parts of the country, and especially those outside. Students were given free computer and Internet trainings on weekends, too.

This is an old sign that greeted my husband and I as we pulled over a space that’s supposed to be a car park. We were visiting the Teuk Chhou waterfalls in Kampot town.
There were several bamboo stalls for customers and a few beverage vendors. We were the only visitors that time. Out of nowhere, a shirtless middle-aged man emerged and handed us a piece of crumpled paper. A parking ticket, he said. The ticket looked old. It had stains and the ink was faded, giving us an impression that it had been used many times over. Looking closely I saw that parking costs $1. Unbelievable. The man was trying to rip us off.
We hastily left.
