APAD 283: Still life

Posted by on Dec 8, 2014 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, Cambodia life, cheap eats, Cycle 2, Expat Life, That's My World, What's On in Cambodia | 0 comments

When I first arrived in Cambodia, I noticed how Cambodians love eating fruits. They have them for snacks and after-meals dessert. Back in the Philippines, snacks usually is composed of starchy, sugary fares like cakes and pastries, burgers, pizzas, you get the picture. And wash them down with artificially-flavoured fruit juices and/or carbonated drinks. So imagine my surprise when fruits, especially local fruits, were served to me for snacks, along with water and tea.

Snacking on fruits. And beer.

Still Life. Apples and oranges, and a can of beer.

When I went to the Philippines along with my Cambodian colleagues for a workshop, they were also overwhelmed by the snacks being served. Which led one colleague to comment about why many Filipinos being fat; that we are eating too much sweets. Of course, that was true.

APAD 240: Same-same but different

Pho is the national noodle soup of the Vietnamese. It’s traditionally eaten at breakfast but it’s also a popular lunch, dinner or snack item. I’ve had pho before – the awesome broth with wafts of ginger and other herbs and slices of beef with rice noodles never fail to make my stomach happy at all times.

The other week, I was introduced to another kind of Vietnamese soup. I forgot what it is called now but it’s got the similar awesome aromatic soup and noodles – if not for the copious amounts of kopi (or was it prahok) for seasoning.

Had this Vietnamese noodle soup for the first time. My officemate said this wasn’t pho.

APAD 163: Jiggly with caffeine!

Posted by on Sep 22, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, cheap eats, drinks, Phnom Penh, Signs, What's On in Cambodia | 3 comments

One of the pleasures of living in Cambodia is sitting down in a streetside cafe and sipping a glass of super-yummy, oh-so-sinfully sweet iced coffee. You can easily get this very sweet beverage anywhere in the city but there is one place at the Russian market that is so popular to both locals, expats and tourists alike that a Facebook fan page was created especially for this legendary iced coffee and its star coffee-maker in Phnom Penh.

So when you are in Russian Market (or Psah Tuol Tumpong) in Phnom Penh and you see this sign…

…  you should really give it a try! Honestly, it’s truth in advertising! I already get jiggly whenever I see this sign and I rush to order one. And the effect on me – I talk non-stop for the whole day, almost manic. Oh gosh, what a kick. It’s not exactly for the health-conscious because it is an extremely rich and strong  caffeine brew with an automatic refill. With that said, I still urge you to try it – it really is worth it! Here is Mr. Bounnarith and his Facebook fan pag and here is an excellent blog post introducing him and his legendary iced coffee.

APAD 144: Phnom Penh’s Noodle House

The sign that never fails to send my salivary glands into a frenzy!
A new find – this noodle-house is a gem! My fellow foodie and I were craving for noodles after watching a movie last week. We consulted our pocket guide and decided to try out this noodle-house along the riverside. With that in mind we  hailed a tuk-tuk and directed the driver to go to the riverside. When we reached Street 130, we got off the tuktuk still not knowing where exactly the restaurant is. So, we just wandered off the Psah Kandal 1 area despite the heat. When we saw this sign, we knew right away that this was where we wanted to be – and it’s going to be in our list of great and cheap eats in Phnom Penh. The Noodle House is sort of a street-side cafe with a cosy, friendly atmosphere. They serve all kinds of Asian noodles, especially la mien, or the Chinese pulled-noodles, and they are made fresh everyday. The menu is still small but diverse enough that my friend and I vowed to come back to sample each item in their menu. And oh, the smoothies are a must-try! This street-side noodle-house-cum-cafe is located at the ground floor of a newly-refurbished French colonial style apartment.
