APAD 114: Details of passageways at Angkor Wat

One of the many passageways in Angkor Wat leading to the main temple’s upper gallery, as seen from the outside. They are made of sandstones, segmented, with pediments decorated with classical Khmer architectural designs. These passageways or hallways lead to other galleries and enclosures.

APAD 109: The Bodyguard

The photo above is one of the reasons why my husband and I love driving through rural Cambodia.
It gives us the chance to see the real Cambodia, the 85% that make up the country. Aside from the fact that it’s a refreshing change of scenery, you also never know what surprises lie ahead of you. Literally. lol.

Cute, no? I was quick enough to grab my cam and took this photo. I normally see this sort of scenes in kids cartoon channels but to see it with our own eyes on one of our road trips to Kampot province was a pleasant surprise and certainly one of the most memorable experiences we have. Who let the ducks out? lol. The last duck, in all its brown glory, looks like the bodyguards of the other white ducks.

APAD 102: Technicolour

Is she familiar to you?

In Phnom Penh, I see this woman every time I go to Psah Thmey or the New Market, commonly (albeit incorrectly) called as the Central Market by most expats. She is one of the colourful figures there. Everyday she stands at the entrance of Psah Thmey offering hammocks of different colours to tourists and locals alike. Oh, she could be very persistent and annoying sometimes.Every time I see her, her colourful wares draped around her body like a sash, and her wide cheeky smile, I am constantly reminded of one of my favourite biblical characters, Joseph the Dreamer.
Can you see the similarities? 🙂

APAD 088: Movers … Phnom Penh style.

Posted by on Jun 7, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, sights, That's My World, transportation | 3 comments

Moving to a new location? No problem. Call Pu, the remorque driver! A remorque (photo above) is a French word meaning “to tow”. In Cambodia, a remorque is a local motorcycle transport with something resembling a trailer behind it.

For local transport there is the ‘remorque’ : a motorcycle with a big trailer behind. Remorque is French for to tow. This type of vehicle must be very Cambodian, there is definitely no Wiki page available on this. What’s more, if the draft version of the traffic law is accepted the remorque will probably cease to exist. The towed trailer is a bit deep and loose planks are laid from side to side which are meant as the seats. Often these are over loaded, 20-30 passengers is no problem. A major safety issue is that the trailer can easily cause the motorcycle front wheel to make a wheelie and thus steeringless. Lucky thing is that these motorcycles can’t drive fast.  (Source)

In the above photo, the seats were taken off to accommodate the cargo. Although the remorques are banned in the city proper, they are everywhere outside of Phnom Penh, carrying passengers and their produce from the market to the villages. They are the local version of movers.

APAD 081: The sugar palm trees of Cambodia

Posted by on May 31, 2011 in A Photo a Day, Addicted to Meme, All things Khmer, Cambodia, Cambodia life, rural, sights, That's My World | 1 comment

The Sugar Palm tree  (borassus flabellifer), or the Asian Palmyra palm, is one of Cambodia’s national icons. These trees are not hard to miss (from afar they look like cute pompom heads on a stick) as they are found all throughout Cambodia, especially in the countryside.

Just like the Philippines’ very own coconut tree, the sugar palm tree plays a very important role in providing a source of food, income, and not to mention as a source of building materials, to Cambodians.
