APAD 113: Devotion

This is a small, make-shift shrine tucked inside one of the halls of the great Angkor Wat.
There are a lot of yellow and yellow-gold stuffs going on here – yellow incense sticks, candles, umbrella, and the spiral tree – all represent good luck, good karma, happiness and abundance. Local people who visit Angkor Wat never fail to light candles and incense sticks here and pray and give tribute to their great ancestors who built the majestic temples. Visitors also offer lotus flowers and fruits to the Lord Buddha and to their ancestors that they watch over them the whole year.

The smell of the incense and the smoke it gave off provided an ethereal feel, at least to me, when I visited Angkor Wat. It’s as if I stepped into another world… a mysterious, celestial place.

APAD 112: Celebration

The dark, gloomy weather this afternoon didn’t dampen the celebratory mood in Phnom Penh. The city’s main streets were “dressed up” in red, white, and blue buntings as well as big and small flags of Cambodia and France were everywhere.

Cheyor, Kampuchea! Vive La Vive la République Française!!

APAD 109: The Bodyguard

The photo above is one of the reasons why my husband and I love driving through rural Cambodia.
It gives us the chance to see the real Cambodia, the 85% that make up the country. Aside from the fact that it’s a refreshing change of scenery, you also never know what surprises lie ahead of you. Literally. lol.

Cute, no? I was quick enough to grab my cam and took this photo. I normally see this sort of scenes in kids cartoon channels but to see it with our own eyes on one of our road trips to Kampot province was a pleasant surprise and certainly one of the most memorable experiences we have. Who let the ducks out? lol. The last duck, in all its brown glory, looks like the bodyguards of the other white ducks.

APAD 107: Elephant ride

APAD 107 A ride on Sambo the elephant

Looks like the backpackers are enjoying the elephant ride. That is Sambo, the elephant. Sambo is the only elephant resident in Phnom Penh. Sambo’s touching story is known to most Phnom Penhois. Her siblings (yes she is a girl) were killed by the Khmer Rouge when she was young. A nine-year old boy took care of her but were separated during the civil war. After the end of the war, they were reunited and were inseparable since then.

Here is a video-interview of Sambo’s caretaker talking about his reunion with Sambo:

APAD 104: Confusion inside the loo

APAD 104 Confused much

A few years ago, I came back from an overseas trip and, while waiting for my baggage to come out of the carousel, I decided to make a dash to the loo. I was chuckling when I saw this sign inside one of the cubicles…

Change? What change?!?! lol.
This is not a mistranslation but merely a misplaced sign that I found to be funny while sitting on the “throne”.
